There is a saying I came across recently by fashion designer, Hubert de Givenchy which reminded me so much of The Thatch House in Hermanus and it goes, “Luxury is in Each Detail”.
This incredible property, situated just outside of Hermanus if you are driving towards Gansbaai in the Overberg, is where Carlinn and I got to spend a night with a few other Travel, Family and Food bloggers in what was “supposedly” the start of Winter in South Africa.
I went Water Skiing, therefore it was NOT the start of Winter, but let me not get ahead of myself here…
Arriving at the The Thatch House in Hermanus is an experience on its own, with a long driveway down to the main house, passing by just a handful of the activities this house offers guests.
Once inside this mansion, that sleeps 12 adults and up to 8 children, you’re greeted with a smile from the staff, a glass of bubbles and are personally escorted to your room, of which Carlinn and I were lucky enough to be given the Honey Bee Suite.
This suite is located upstairs, sleeps 2 adults in the main room, but can sleep up to 5 with the adjoining room which can be accessed through the main room or the private terrace.
It has a walk-in closet that connects to a bathroom for HER, as well as a separate shower & toilet for HIM.
The private terrace was awesome for looking down onto the rolling lawns below that eventually joined the Hermanus Lagoon, which is where we all met up for a sunset cruise after an afternoon of eating amazing food, drinking local wines and exploring what the property had to offer.
The Thatch House offers a huge range of facilities and activities for it’s guests, making sure that you’re never bored while visiting.
There’s something for kids, something for adults and something the whole family can take part in, you just need to make your choice. My favorites were of course skiing on the Hermanus Lagoon first thing in the morning, as well as flying my drone over a mate I met that weekend while he was skiing during sunset.

Food at The Thatch House
During your stay at The Thatch House, you do not have to worry about the cooking because Chef Terry has you sorted! She can either cook an amazing meal for you each night off her own menu, or if you feel like buying the groceries and asking for a dish, she can do that too.
Rest assured, your meals are going to be cooking by a pro who knows what she is doing and someone that caters for meat lovers all the way to vegan, vegetarian and halal meals.

Important info to note when booking The Thatch House
The Thatch House can either be rented as a self catering, where you bring your own food and Chef Terry will cook it for you, or as an all inclusive package where ALL your food and drinks are covered. This includes a selection of the amazing local wines from Creation Wines, one of the Overberg’s most well established farms.
